Shimla to Chail Road Trip Guide: Green Valley, Chail Palace & Kali Ka Tibba.
If you think hill station drives are just about reaching the destination, the journey from Shimla to Chail will change your mind. This short mountain route is filled with pine forests, valley views, royal history, and peaceful temples, making it an experience in itself.
While staying in Shimla, we have planned a day visit to this little explored, untouched hillstation Chail that offers a refreshing escape from the crowds and chaos of popular tourist destinations.
We started our day journey around 11:00 AM after heavy breakfast so that we can utilise our lunch time to travel. Hired a cab for our Chail travel that is approx 45 kms from Shimla.
π² First Stop > Green Valley
Just a short drive from Shimla, Green Valley is one of the most photographed spots in the region. As you pass through, you’ll see rolling hills covered in dense deodar and pine trees stretching endlessly. I was awed by the vastness of greenary nd lost in the reverieπ
π Royal Glimpse > Rashtrapati Niwas, Mashobra
As you move towards Mashobra, you’ll pass the historic Rashtrapati Niwas. Built during British times, this grand building is surrounded by thick cedar forests.
One of the most pleasant parts of the visit is the electric cart ride from the entrance towards the main building. The ride feels calm and scenic, winding paths, thick greenery, and cool (chilling π₯Ά) mountain air all around. It almost feels like entering a private royal retreat away from the world. You need to purchase ticket at the counter and thereafter security checkin you are allowed inside.
As you move closer, the grand structure slowly comes into view. Built during the British era, the architecture reflects classic colonial style with stone walls, wooden detailing, and wide verandas.
You need to submit phones outside before entering inside the main building. It is a guided tour in a batch of 10-15 people, where you can learn about the historic importance, artitecture uniqueness and its role as summer retreat to The President of India.
Also there is a telescope available at a nominal rate to see parts of the Shivalik and Greater Himalayan ranges Peaks as shown in picture belowπ
π Arrival in Chail >The Royal Chail Palace
Chail Palace, built by the Maharaja of Patiala, stands gracefully amidst lush greenery. The architecture reflects royal elegance, and the open lawns offer beautiful mountain views.
The entry ticket to the Palace is 200 INR per head and only a small portion and a restuarant is open to public. Rest area is converted into a residential hotel. I personally have not found it that good and you may skip this if running out of time and can move ahead.
π Final Stop > Sunset at Kali Ka Tibba
Now moving towards the climax of our Chail travel, about 6–7 km from Chail market lies Kali Ka Tibba, the highest point in Chail. The road to the temple passes through forest stretches and scenic curves. That's the hilltop temple view from bottomπ
Reaching the top feels so rewarding, that you immerse yourself into the vastness of Himalayan ranges π The temple is dedicated to Maa Kali, is small, simple and peaceful. If you schedule your visit near sunset, the sky transforms into shades of gold and pink.
There are no loud crowds, just silence, wind, temple bells and endless mountains. It’s the kind of place where you sit quietly and let the moment sink in.

π Final Thoughts
Shimla is lively and energetic. Chail is peaceful and slow. This drive beautifully connects both moods. Take your time. Stop often. Enjoy the silence between destinations. Sometimes, the road itself becomes the best memory of the trip. Return to Shimla after the sunset, have dinner and rest for the day with heart full of happiness π«Ά
