A Perfect Day in Shimla: Palaces, Temples & Mountain Views
There’s something magical about waking up in the mountains. That Balcony view, Sun rising from behind the mountains, the air feels fresher, the sky seems clearer, and time moves a little slower. That’s exactly how my day in Shimla began, with misty hills, crisp mountain air, and the excitement of exploring this charming hill station.
If you only have one day in Shimla, don’t worry. You can still experience its colonial history, spiritual spots, and breathtaking Himalayan views π€
Morning at the Grand Viceregal Lodge
I started my morning at the magnificent Viceregal Lodge, also known as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. This historic building once served as the summer residence of the British Viceroy.
The grey stone architecture, wooden interiors, and beautifully maintained gardens instantly transport you back to the British era. It has an entry ticket and a part of this monument is converted into huge library.
A Visit to the Army Heritage Museum
Next, I stopped at the inspiring Army Heritage Museum. This museum showcases the bravery and history of the Indian Army through fascinating exhibits, war memorabilia, and stories of soldiers. This has an entry ticket.
You can even use the war weapons for shooting activities. It’s a meaningful place that adds a deeper historical perspective to your Shimla trip.
Himalayan Bird Park – A Quiet Nature Break
Just nearby Shimla is the peaceful Himalayan Bird Park. Surrounded by tall deodar trees and greenery, the park houses several rare Himalayan bird species. You can just stroll around quickly and check your list or even can avoid it.
Drive to Kufri for Mountain Views
After exploring the town, I headed towards Kufri, a small hill station about 15 km from Shimla. The drive itself is scenic, with winding roads through pine forests and glimpses of the Himalayas. Kufri is famous for snow activities in winter after snowfall, but even during other seasons, the cool weather and panoramic views make it worth the visit.
You can visit Apple garden, mountain bike ride and even can do zip lining.
Don't forget to have the Shimla special food - SIDDU π
Seek Blessings at Jakhu Temple
Back in Shimla, the next stop was the famous Jakhu Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Located on the highest hill in Shimla, the temple is known for its towering 108 feet Hanuman statue visible from many parts of the city. The view from the top is breathtaking. I have witnessed the mesmerizing sunset from hereπ
Just one tip- watch out for the mischievous monkeys here!
Evening Walk on Mall Road
After Jakku temple, I made my way to the lively Mall Road. This is the heart of Shimla, filled with charming cafes, bakeries, souvenir shops, and colonial buildings. The cool evening breeze, warm street lights, and bustling atmosphere make it the perfect place to end a day of exploring.
Best Time to Visit Shimla
Shimla is beautiful throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons.
July to September: Lush greenery during monsoon
December to February: Snowfall and winter charm
What to Wear in Shimla
Mountain weather can change quickly, so it’s best to pack smart. Comfortable walking shoes/boots , Light jackets even in summer, Warm layers during winter, Sunglasses and sunscreen. Evening and night gets colder so be prepared.
