Surkanda Trek Guide – The Peaceful Himalayan Temple Near Mussoorie
Nestled in the serene hills of Uttarakhand, the Surkanda Devi Temple is one of the 51 famous Shakti Peetha. It is believed that head/hair of Mata Sati have fallen here. This is highly revered temple of the region, located near Mussoorie. The short yet scenic trek to this temple offers breathtaking mountain views, fresh pine air, and a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
πWhere is Surkanda Devi Temple Located?
Surkanda Devi Temple is situated near Dhanaulti in Uttarakhand at an altitude of around 2,750 meters. It is approximately 33 km from Mussoorie, the route is cascading mountains road, so time required to reach may take around 2 hours.
π₯Ύ How to reach Surkanda Devi Temple?
The temple can be reached by a rope way and knowing that we started our journey from mussoorie in a cab π. But after reaching Kaddukhal village near Dhanaulti we got to know that, the same day the ropeway was non-functional πand therefore we needed to trek to reach the temple. We were mentally unprepared but the excitement π of darshan of deity at Surkanda Devi that is worshipped as a manifestation of Shakti and the view of scenic himalayasπ️ from the top, from where the panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including peaks like Bandarpunch, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, we pumped ourselves up and started the trek. πΆ♀️
⏰How much time is required ?
We started our journey from Mussoorie at 11:00 AM and reached dhanaulti by 1:00 PM, started our trek at 1:30 PM and reached at top around 3:00 PM. We then had darshan, clicked photos and enjoyed the panoramic himalayan views. We then started our down trek journey by 4:30 PM and reached the base at 5:00 PM.
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
The path is well-paved with steps for most of the route. Beginners, families, and even first-time trekkers can comfortably complete it. There is also a ropeway option available for those who prefer not to trek.

The best time for the Surkanda trek is-
I have visited the temple in late January, and the atmosphere was clear, little cold that increased by the evening. As there was no snowfall at that time so the trek was convenient. But duing winter, the temple area may receive snowfall, making the trek magical but slightly more challenging.
